Replacement Radios

Re: Replacement Radios

What was the performance you had a problem with? Was it noise or was it sensitivity/selectivity?? I'm considering buying a Michel 170C but am unsure of it's compatibility with th King MX170. Thanks for any additional information.....PAC

Re: Replacement Radios

To all the people with questions about TKM radios. I own a small avionics business (Northern Arizona Avionics) at the Cottonwood, AZ Airport.  My main work is Pitot/Static Transponder certifications but I also perform a large number of avionics installs and upgrades.  I personally have installed or assisted owner installs of many TKM radios in the time I have been working in avionics.  I have only seen 2 radios with problems. (I can't say that about Bendix-King or Narco.) One of the problem TKM units was not the fault of the radio but the result of a worn out 20 year old connector on the avionics tray.  The radio that was faulty was returned to TKM and they repaired and returned it to us within 2 weeks. It is still working fine 1 year later.  The last Narco unit I sent in took over three weeks and only after we called to check on it. Also the Narco unit was a factory warranty repair of a failed repair they had done 1 month earlier. I would not have any hesitation about replacing the radios in my plane with TKM units if they made a replacment for Collins Microline, but they don't.  To the fellow with the 150F the MX11 R will run just fine on 14 (12) volt systems. No voltage converter is required. The only caveat in all cases of plug in replacements is that you will have a new radio, but your wiring, connectors and indicators will still be old and possibly troublesome.  I would also recommend that you check your aircraft speaker for damage and possibly replace it the same time you swap out the radio. To the person with the glide slope question. TKM sells a separate glide slope receiver that will drive your g/s needle and it will connect directly to the MX-12 and the omni head for automatic channeling. Check with a TKM dealer directly for pricing and cost to install in your aircraft. Also I have seen brand new King radios that were one serial number apart and one of them had an incredibly sensitive receiver and the other was nearly stone deaf. The deaf one could not be repaired to the customer's satifaction so it was replaced with a totally different unit. Usually the same model radios from the same manufacturer will perform relatively similar but not always. It could be an unfortunate grouping of random variables that all swing one way or another that results in a either a really impressive radio or a dog. All manufacurers make mistakes from time to time.

Re: Replacement Radios

On the subject, I'm about to replace the old Narco Mark 12A's on my 182 and was thinking of going with the natural replacement Narco Mark 12D/Rs. But can any body tell me if based on their experience, is the Michel TKM a better radio for the money or should I stick with Narco?. I believe they will drive my glideslpe indicator without having to rewire. Does any body have first hand experience with the Narco replacement radios?

Re: Replacement Radios

The mx 300 is a good slide in replacement radio for the old cessna 300s.  I purchased a 1975 c172m and replaced one of the old radios with a mx 300 and the other with a mx 300v.  There is no wireing involved.  Just slide out the old radio and slide in the mx 300 using the same tray to remove the old radio out of.  The difference between the mx 300 and mx 300v is the mx 300v is older and has a built in vor.  The both have the flip flop stand by nav com on them.
I would suggest you look on ebay under nav com or mx 300.  I purchased my radios there for a fraction of the new price.  The 300 cost me $600 and the 300V was $700.
I hope this helps

Re: Replacement Radios

I purchased 2 Michel 170C to replace King 175 & 170B in my 172E with a king intercom.I am experiencing the same bleed-over you talked about but with noise while talking on com 1. My radios are 0ne week old.
Both coms turned "on" and transmit on Com 1,lots of static noise.
*Both coms turned "on" and I transmit on Com 2, no static noise.
*Com 1 "on", Com 2 "off", transmit on Com 1, no static noise.
*Com 2 "on", Com 1 "off", transmit on Com 2, no bleed-over.

*I hear (A hum) when I turn # 1 com & the hum increase when I turn the second com on, even if the engine is off.

Re: Replacement Radios

George,

It turned out that my bleedover was caused by the lack of an "interlock" which is installed by TKM.  I'm not quite sure if this is a fix or an upgrade for an older radio but it solved the problem.

I had to send my radios back to TKM, though.  You might want to call first as Kathy was overwhelmed last fall when I did mine; took quite awhile and they never repaired one unit I sent back (had to ship it again).

Re: Replacement Radios

Narco MK 12-D connecting with Narco VOA 50-m.
Have you tried this combo? I think I could do it if I had a interconnection diagram for a VOA 50-M / MK12-d.
I have a diagram for a 50-m to a MK24/URG-2/MBT-R and the install info for the MK12-D to  a 824 or 825 indicator,
But the pin info is some what different.

However the cables that comes with the trays was chop in the centre. It have the cannon connector to the Indicator but none to the receiver. The avionics engineer do not have the wiring diagram to do up this system. Can any one help?

Re: Replacement Radios

I changed an old 300 radio for an ICOM A-200.  It was a simple install and saved 6 pounds. Radio works fine.  I would be suspect of putting a new radio in an old rack because a lot of the time the problem is with the rack.

Re: Replacement Radios

I have a michel 300mx that has worked flawlessly for 10+years. recently it quit transmitting.  I sent it to TKM and $500 later it works well in a friends plane but it still doesn't work in mine.  It recieves fine but won't transmit.  I've checked the push-to-talk switch and the mic jack and both are fine, is there a transmit relay or something external to the radio that could be at fault?
