Replacement Radio Bleed-Over
Replacement Radio Bleed-Over
Anyone experiencing problems with bleed-over from the Michel replacement radios?
I own a Piper Arrow that had KX170's when I bought it a year ago. I replaced one of them with a Michel MX170C and flew with it for 5 months to see how it performed. I didn't have any problems at all so last month, I purchased the 2nd and I am experiencing bleed-over. My newest radio is Com 1 and the 5 month old is Com 2. This is what is happening with mine:
*Both coms turned "on" and transmit on Com 1, it bleeds onto another frequency at my base airport.
*Both coms turned "on" and I transmit on Com 2, no bleed-over.
*Com 1 "on", Com 2 "off", transmit on Com 1, no bleed-over.
*Com 2 "on", Com 1 "off", transmit on Com 2, no bleed-over.
I haven't had a chance to talk to anyone at Michel yet so I don't know their resonse to this problem. Anyone having the same issues?

Re: Replacement Radio Bleed-Over
Comm 1 is receiving the comm 2 transmission which is causing oscillation in the comm 1 transmitter circuit and rebroadcasting as spatter. Several things may cause this.
An internal problem with the comm 1.
Antenna or coax problem with Comm 1. Antenna ground.
Antennas too close together.
I even had one where the long wire ADF antenna picked up the transmission and ran it back to close to the other comm antenna... causing the same issue.

It appears that you have a microphone select switch problem. What I suspect is actually happening is that the PTT line of COM2 is being activated when COM1 is also activated. Check the wiring to the audio panel and the audio panel MIC select switch.

The microphone select switch could be easily tying both PTT lines together when set to COM1 but not when set to COM2. This type of shorting is not uncommon on wafer switches used on audio panels. Suggest spraying contact cleaner on the switch and rotating it several times.
