C150 Fuel valve

C150 Fuel valve

Can anyone suggest a source for a 1968 C150H fuel valve? (Cessna p/n 0411803-6) Mine is leaking and very hard to move, was found at annual.

A new part from Cessna is $500!

Re: C150 Fuel valve

I had a leak from my shutoff valve on a '73-C172M.  It was fixed by replacing the o-rings. Can't yours be rebuilt?

Re: C150 Fuel valve

I would think so Barry but so far I have not been able to locate a rebuild kit. I am a bit leary of using just any o rings because they might not be compatible with AV gas

Re: C150 Fuel valve

You're right to concern youself with the material. Doesn't an A&P need to do this work?  He should know what material is OK to use and compatability with AvGas. Have you searched the web for "o-rings, gaskets & Av Gas"?

Re: C150 Fuel valve

I was just checking out <www.Aircraft-Spruce.com>.  If you type in the search "o-ring" it comes up with a lot of choices and says fuel resistant.  Perhaps if you call them up they might have a catalog or indexing system to identify the one you need.  At least they might be able to recommend someone who can.

Good luck.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

I read once where a valve started to leak after being shut off. It had been in the "on" position so long, the O-rings got brittle over time and started to leak after the lever was moved.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

Bryan,

That is just what happened. It was on for who knows how long and then I shut it off in preparing for the annual then the leaks began.

Barry thanks for the info, I will look into the o rings further. Yes, my AP will do all the work and is going to look into this issue as well in hopes of saving the cost of a replacement valve. I am just trying to save him some leg work.

Also, for everyones information the Cessna part number I listed above is no longer available. The Cessna recommended replacement is 9851078-4. That I was able to find on the I want Cessna parts web site for $458. Gad!

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

Blame the trial lawyers
The research, development, and manufacturing is not very expensive.  Cessna has to charge that much in order to be able to pay very high insurance and settlement costs.  Also enough profit to stay in business.
Any industry which has deep pockets has been devistated by greedy lawyers and wimpy members of the jury.
The only time common sense does not pay off in the court room.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

Lets not forget those that initiate the frivilous law suits. In many cases it is a pilot that takes a company like Cessna to court. All too often it is pilot error and not the aircraft manufacturer.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

Thanks to all for your input. I was able to get the valve rebuilt and it now works well with a good cleaning and new O rings.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

Vin,

I have the same exact problem.  What O-rings did you use and where did you find them?  Thanks.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

Hello DWC;

Your fuel valve might be different, but the fuel valves on my '72 and '74 C-150s didn't use o-rings in the assembly.  My A&P fixed the leaky valve using some lapping compound and re-seated it just like re-seating a valve in the cylinder head, working it back and forth until it seated properly.

Re: C150 Fuel valve

You might want to lubricate the valve with a little fuel proof lube.
