Wing Fixture plans
Re: Wing Fixture plans
Drawings are a good thing, when your looking for basic data and ideas. But when your finished building the wing fixture, how do you know that it is exactly right without being able to install a known good wing into it to verify.
I've never seen a Cessna factory jig. I have seen quite a few "homebuilt" jigs. Some of them produce results as good or better than Cessna, and others would serve humanity better if they were permanently installed on a playground somewhere.
As shop rates go up and parts prices soar, alot of aircraft owners are searching for cheaper alternatives. I've spoken to a few owners just in the past year that are also interested in a fixture. I have considered building a second unit to rent out to people interested in doing there own repairs. Transportation might be an issue for some.
Ideas anybody?
Re: Wing Fixture plans
The aircraft maintenance manual shows how and where to support the aircraft for various maintenance procedures. You can obtain a copy through Cessna, and get a copy of their catalog of available information at (316) 517-5800. Nope, they do not have a toll free number.
The AMM specifies the methods and locations where to support the aircraft; what equipment you use to do that is up to you. Knowing the weight of the aircraft, you can craft up whatever works. There are a number of jacks/stands shown in the Aircraft Spruce Catalog, but I am sure that there are lots of other suppliers, too. Visit your local, friendly FBO and see what they use. Just be sure that whatever you do use, make it sturdy enough and be sure that it is stable enough to not fall over on top of you (because Murphy's Law says that you can bet the aircraft will be jostled and bumped while up on the jacks).
Re: Wing Fixture plans
I've been looking for the fuselage jig called out in Cessna General Letter number 26 and the print showing the structural measurements to make to ensure the fuselage is straight. I found one of the jigs at a repair shop. Cessna says they don't have plans for the jig nor the structural measurement drawing. I did come up with service kit 8053-1 that shows how to set up the jig in letter #26. I've been trying to communicate with various old Cessna distributors to see if they have a copy of the drawings or the jig itself. not a whole lot of luck on that yet.
I'd be intrerested in any drawings or plans that can be found for fuselage or wing jigs.

Re: Wing Fixture plans
I'm currently having the wings rebuilt for my 172 and the A/P is building a jig from a set of plans. I could ask if he would be willing to share or where he got them. I think he has had them for some time. The guy working in the shop indicated that they have had the materials for several years and planned on building the jig but didn't really have the need till I came along.
Re: Wing Fixture plans
Jay,
Have you had a chance to ask your A&P about his jig plans.
An IA friend of mine and I are planning to build a jig. We have two undamaged wings we plan to use to help us get things located properly but would really like a set of plans to help us avoid a great deal of experimentation.
Please contact me if he is willing to talk about his jig.
Thanks in advance,
Clay
Re: Wing Fixture plans
We have several wing and flight control jigs that we use in house. We have designed a majority of them our selves. Sorry, I can not sell any schematics we have of them, but if your looking to have someone repair your wings or flight controls for a desent price, dont hesitate to look us up.....WWW.StraightFlight.com
Re: Wing Fixture plans
REF: 172 Skylark
I'm looking to do a camera install through the lower skin, in the cargo compartment right behind the back seat.
QUESTION:
1) Does anyone know of where I can pull structural drawings & loads for the defined area?
2) Does anyone know of anyone who has a comparable mod?
thanks, JOe...
