Minor leaks - oil return lines
Minor leaks - oil return lines
I have a 1980 172N and have a minor amount of oil spread on inside bottom cowl after 2-3 hrs. operation. I suspect leak at hoses that couple the return tubes from heads to sump. Is this a common problem?

I found a fitting loose--the blue colored nut that attaches the return line under the cyl. Oil was leaking like crazy around this nut and making a real mess but the A&P never suspected it....he thought it was all coming from the top of the case halves seal. While looking at it with him, I reached over and turned the nut with my hand--just a lucky hit on my part. He immediately took his wrench and tightened the nut and said "well that's fixed". Jeez...it cost me about $150 to fix that leak and I'M the one who had to diagnose it !!! I don't use that guy any longer!
So---check ALL those "blue nuts" for leaks (they may not be blue on your engine).
