Honing channel chrome cyls
I have found that my C175 has four steel cylinders and two channel chrome cylinders. What is to best procedure for reconditioning the chrome cylinder walls prior to new ring installation? The surfaces of the chrome look good and they measured well within the service limits in all respects. Should the chrome jugs be honed just like the steel ones? It does not seem like this would be correct since the chrome is so much harder. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Re: Honing channel chrome cyls
Chrome is an electroplating, finishing process for steels. So if you hone the surface you will likely destroy the protection the chrome affords and have steel cylinders again. Of course, if there is a true need to hone then worrying about the finish isn't the primary concern. You may need to replate the surface again if you want chrome cylinders.
I'm no expert, but I would suppose the reasons for honing includes (among other things) removing the surface contaminants, e.g. oxidation and other chemical byproducts of combustion, as well as and primarily if the cylinder is "out of round". But you stated the surface is free of contaiminants and within specs. So why destroy it?
Among the purposes for chrome finishing is to protect the underlying steel from corrosion mechanisms, provide surface with lower friction and less sites for containments to adhere and better radiation characteristics. (Although I know not everyone cares or believes much about the later.)
As I stated this is just an opinion, let's here from more people that have direct experience with rebuilding engines with chrome cylinders. There's no substitute for experience.
