182RG oil readings

As owner of 1979 182RG, I would like to ask the forum about getting wildly differing oil readigs, from first pull to third pull.

Any tips?

We are running 3 of these RGs and what works best for us is to pull, wipe and re-insert the dipstick - then do the preflight . After that time delay, we pull and recheck the dipstick oil level. It seems to give us the most accurate reading.

I have started flying a 1978 C-182RG and the dip stick reads 2 qts. low after filling 8 qt. at oil change. We are not sure if it is the correct dip stick. Local engine shop said it is the correct dip stick! We use the 6qt. mark as the 8 qt. mark.

Wierd - I measured the dip-stick for you... It is 15 1/8 inches. That is the actual length of the flat strip. (Not any part of the packing stem). You might give yours a measure and see how your stick compares... Ours are reading 8 qts after an 8 qt oil change. jack

Better mention - it is an 0-540J3C5D Lycoming.

may be the right dipstick, but the wrond dipstick tube.

I have a 1979 182 and to get a correct oil read, i pull the dip stick out, wipe clean, then put back in, to the bottom pull back 2-3 times, then pull out to read it. The reason for a low reading is that there are small o-rings at the top of the dip stick that seals the dip stick tube and pushes the level lower when inserting the dip stick.
