Seat belts on wrong?

Seat belts on wrong?

Does anybody know how the seat belts should be installed?? Which side has the buckle?

Re: Seat belts on wrong?

On my 182 the tabs are on the door side.
I have a vivid recollection of the passenger side
belt hanging outside with the door shut.
Thats bad for the belt and can be really hard on the pant
if you take off like that. A good reason
to have them buckled when not in use.
When I go to buckle up, my buckle is usually sitting on the passenger seat.
Come to think of it, all the vehicles I own with belts have the tabs on the door side

Re: Seat belts on wrong?

Buckle is on the same side as the doors (front seats)

Re: Seat belts on wrong?

They're your seatbelts...what would be your preferrence?
You could take a walk down the parking area and look at your neighbors belts.  I don't think there's a rule as to what side the buckle would be on...it'll be the opposite on the passenger seat.

Re: Seat belts on wrong?

I was referring the retracting shoulder harness type.  our shoulder harnesses attach from the center cabin ceiling so the buckle has to be near the doors. If you don't have shoulder harnesses - I guess that theory is out the window..

Re: Seat belts on wrong?

The reason I ask is beacuse I just bought another 172 and it seems that the shoulder harnesses don't secure very well. They tend to come off from the latch on the seatbelt itself.

Re: Seat belts on wrong?

oops...sorry...I wasn't even think about shoulder harnesses.
I don't have them even though I think they are a very good idea.
You definately do not want the shoulder strap to attach to the strap that mounts between the seats.  If you have to make a quick exit, you won'n want the shoulder strap to be holding you in after you unbuckle the seatbelt.  If the shoulder strap is connected to the door side of the seat..(ie; on the door post) it should connect to the seatbelt strap that is mounted on the door side of the seat also.
I'd say whatever strap that the shoulder strap connects to, that strap  should be on the door side...be it buckle or tab...

"tend to come off from the latch on the seatbelt itself"

This seems to be a common problem of the old nonretractable type shoulder harnesses; my 172L's harness is always disconnecting in flight.

I saw a beautifully restored 182 at the Homecoming that had BAS (I think) seatbelts with a ceiling-mounted inertial reel.  It looked like a much better system.
