cycling prop

cycling prop

I have recently heard that a major engine overhauler has done tests and discovered that deep cycling of constant speed props during run-up is a major stressor on aircraft engines.  Causing the connecting rods to actually bend etc.  Resulting in undue wear on the engine.  They recommend cycling very briefly, allowing only a 50 to 100 rpm drop to ensure proper oiling.  Any comments?

Re: cycling prop

Steve.
You are exactly correct.
The reason for cycling the prop is to ensure proper operation of the pitch abilities of the propeller.
Deep cycling is the equivilant of peddling a bicycle up a steep hill in the highest gear.
