The best fix is an inexpensive kit called "Sky Catch" that attaches to the original Cessna strike bracket. It is simple to install, has adjustable springloaded grip tension, and is corrosion resistant.

I installed these on my 172 several years ago, and am extremely pleased with them.

Looks like a great replacment Stan! Better then the original design.
One more thing. Is there an STC for the C172 or did you get field approval from your local FSDO? If field approval, did you do your own documentation or did you borrow from someone else?
