Sticky Primer
The primer on our 172E has recently become difficult to pull out and push in. It fills with fuel OK. Can it be lubed -or- does it need new o-rings? Any suggestions?

Hmmm - I had an old girlfriend like that

Pull primer out
Squirt with WD-40
Pull in and out a couple of times
Repeat every few months or write memo,
I must fly more often

Make sure the primer shaft is not bent. I saw this happen to a rental Skyhawk.

I have tried the lub and new packing thing on the last two problem primers.. My opinion now - Won't last, problem will return... Replace it now with a new one and save the hassle.

what is the big hassle of unscrewing the thing and changing two o-rings. changing the whole primer is a bitch

kayakook, that is exactly what I do when ours get stiff. Install 2 new o-rings (fuel type) and will usually last for about 8 months. In a pinch I spray with silicone but is only a temporary fix. A new primer I would be afraid to ask price. cheers!

I install new O-Rings when mine stops priming.
When it gets sticky I give it one shot WD-40.
total time - 5 seconds.
Life of fix - several months
Repeat - every few months as needed.
This fix costs nothing.
Installing new O-rings legally requires that the work be performed by a certified A & E Tech. Where I live they charge $200.00 to say Good Morning"

Try using DC-4 on the 0-rings. It works great, better than WD40 and is made to lubricate 0-rings.

Pull out the shaft and lube the o-rings with DC-4 (Dow Corning). I dont think that WD-40 is the right answer it will attract dirt and dry up quickly.

DC-4 will work fine. Use conservatively since DC-4 does not dissove in fuel.
