337 Skymaster +Floats
Re: 337 Skymaster +Floats
Thanks Jack . . .
I was afraid that spray on the rear prop might be an issue and I was sure that floats would make her a little sluggish. I have been studying the situation (I'm an engineer) with an eye toward a single center float with wing pontoons. A single hull with properly configured spray rails and some aerodynamics might make the program feasible. My E-Mail address is

Please send me the picture, too, if you dont mind. I was just recenty asking this question to quite a few folks. I talked to a guy from wipline (leading manufacturer of amphib floats) who said that it was infeasible due to the spray on the rear prop. Center float would be interesting, though!

Re: 337 Skymaster +Floats
If you could in include me in the list wanting the picture, it was a 336, N1795Z, a stol kit would have helped but it would have needed bigger engines to be worthwhile. Gil Devore had a scheme using a set of airfoils between the floats to protect the rear prop, but the project died due to the general lack of performance
We still have the airplane

Re: 337 Skymaster +Floats
Hi. I had the same question regarding floats on a Skymaster and saw that you were looking into this question some time go ago on this forum thread. I would be interested to hear your conclusions (plus if you happen to have the picture of the plane with the floats I would be interested to see that as well.
Thanks,
Chris
Re: 337 Skymaster +Floats
I have gave a lot of thought to putting floats on a 337 and was thinking of modafying a set of floats in the manner of a pickel fork boat by adding a wing type center to help prop spray but im afraid that if your rigging was not just perfect it may make the plane pitch out of control on its own and one may not recover it.makes me wander if the wing would pack the weight of the floats? another way would be to use some material like on a trampoline that would flex with the wind and may be attached by springs to the float and this would alow flex and keep heavy water off the prop still may get small mist but prop may be able to handle it,also allowing air to go through. just a thought
Re: 337 Skymaster +Floats
The float has a maximum practical length. The problem is with a longer float when you go to increase the angle of attack to lift off the water the tail of the float will drag in the water and slow the plane down. When taking off in most float planes you have to find the sweet spot. Too nose down and not enough lift on the wings. Too nose up and the tails of the floats drag.
In regards to a skymaster on floats I would guess any 185 would out perform it. Outriggers would be needed (like a Seabee) which would cause lots of drag. The rear prop would still get chewed up by water spray. Water blown from the front prop would end up on the back. The sky master would be way heavier than the 185.
It would be an interesting engineering task to accomplish but otherwise a waste of time.
Re: 337 Skymaster +Floats
Hi,
I am also interested in a picture of a skymaster on floats as I am currently building a 1/2 scale radio controlled skymaster and have more access to water that large areas of land. The rear prop does seem to be the biggest issue but it would be good to see how they look on floats.
many thanks in advance
Paul
