Pull-start
Re: Pull-start
Gloria, I had pull start on my 66 C-150, also hard to pull. Lube-ing it didn't really help much. I finally learned the "technique", at least for that plane. Hope I can remember--its been a while.
First, I pulled the handle out with my right hand until it was almost ready to engage--resistance gets high. At this point, I grabbed it further down the shaft with my LEFT hand, while placing my right hand on throttle. This made it quite easy to pull the remainder of the way to the start position.
After "learning" this way, I never complained again---try it. But this does not address your question. Hopefully someone can.

Re: Pull-start
Almost forgot, upsides to the pull start are 1) no relay or bendix to go bad 2) you control engagement of starter, therefore if battery dies while cranking, the starter doesn't stay engaged with the gear while you're trying to hand-prop it. It was a very trouble-free system for me. Have your A&P make sure the cable is adjusted correctly--that might make it easier to manage.
Re: Pull-start
I have a pull start on my C150H and my mechanic adjusted the engagement mechanism and it works great. It is still a very firm pull though but is easily done with one hand.
I agree with bob, it is a good reliable starting method. It is also very expensive to convert to a key or pushbutton start, like the better part of $1000.
my 2 cents
