172m needs new interior
Re: 172m needs new interior
Rather than emailing, I have several pics posted here. If you want higher resolution, let me know.

Re: 172m needs new interior
I took the old ones and stripped the chrome from the plastic, and shot them in duponts Plas-stick base coat and duponts vinyl paint top coat. Then Jerry so kindly supplied a square foot of the matching cloth and I stretched and glued the upholstered insert with new material, and screwed it back in place.
If you don't have the plastic piece, I would suggest dropping Earl aviation a line for some used replacments. I am very satisfied with their services, and have used them on several occasions.

Re: 172m needs new interior
I did the plastic a few years ago, as memory serves me , it ran about 1100$ from PlanePlastics. Check with Hangar bay online to get pricing for the rest.
All the plastic needed cutting and trimming, which is a timely affair. I spent several hours fitting each piece, made a lot of trips to the airport and back to my business to do the trimming. A belt sander is almost a must. Rough cuts can be made with good Sheetmetal cutters. Drill the inside corners though.
The headliner was original from when I bought the plane.
To paint the newly installed plastic takes about 30 minutes from when it is preped an ready to shoot. I washed it very well in tide first to strip any stains. oils, and armorall, and rinsed very thouroghly. Then a final wash in denatured alcohol. I would not suggest using the SEM plastic spray in a can. Get the proper stuff from Dupont, and base coat first, then top coat in the color and gloss you want. Shoots with a gun. The plastic is a form of ABS with a burn retardant, therefore I'd suggest being very careful with the product you choose.
If I did it all at the same time, I think it would take the following.
This is a best guess:
Strip interior, remove doors 3 hrs
replace and paint plastic- 40 hrs
prep seatframes and paint , 10 hrs
Headliner ????
Install seat upholstery 12 hrs
install door upholstery 12 hrs
reassemble interior 4 hrs
In addition, I have about 50 bucks in 3M-08090 vinyl top adheasive, and 120$ in paint.
Hope this is what your looking for. Quite a few things I did were not necessary, but I did them anyhow, because I am very picky.

Re: 172m needs new interior
Jim, I would like to see the pictures or your interior. I almost ordered my interior from Airtex yesterday but they have a 8 week lead time. I'm not too happy about that. Thanks al.

Re: 172m needs new interior
I'm at the same point many of you folks are, i.e. my 1967 C172H has a "VERY TIRED" 20 year old Airtex interior that needs to "go". I would very much appreciate anybody that has photos of either Airtex or Hangar Bay interiors in a Cessna, to send those to me. I'm ready to move and looking for ideas and options. From the sound of it, Hangar Bay seems to have an edge. I spoke with Jerry on the phone and he sounds like a very honest and sincere man. Not to say anything bad about Airtex..those folks have been doing this for decades..and still are..so THEY must be doing something right, too. Any advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated!
Re: 172m needs new interior
a year later and the thread is still alive! I will dig the pics up today and send them. FWIW, a year later and a hundred and a half hours, and it appears to be holding up rather well. The materials ans workmanship are lasting the test of time. Hangar bay is the way to go IMO.
Re: 172m needs new interior
Hey, I don't think this thread will EVER die.....I'll bet the prices change though!
I've got a 172 that I'd like to redo the interior on....Can you send those pics to me as well?
