Two blades vs three
Two blades vs three
We have a 1978 R182 that needs a new prop and we are thinking to replace the old prop with a three blade McCauley. I understand it is quieter and give a better take-off and climb performance but it might reduce cruse speed.
Any experience regarding two vs. three blades.

Re: Two blades vs three
Correct. 3 blade is quieter smoother, better take off, but - a little slower. We are operating three of these R182s. Two with 3 blade and 1 with 2 blade. It does change the weight up front if you change the configuration. The props do weigh differently which may be a factor for you.
Re: Two blades vs three
Some of the three blade prop installations are shorter than two blade.
This may be a factor to consider if you operate from strips where sand or gravel pepper your blades.
I remember reading in a Piper Saritoga manual that the three blade prop could be run at full power while the two blade was limited to five minutes at ful power. My guess is the 3 bladed prop must have reduced the harmonics. No one has ever explained this to me but perhaps Walter or George could address this subject.
