Stby elect vacuum pump.
Stby elect vacuum pump.
I'm thinking of having a stby elect vac pump installed on my 1978 C-182Q to back up the piece of crap dry pump thats there now. Has anyone out there done this mod, and what was the cost? There is a wet pump replacement now on the market for $1895.00 that has a 10 yr. warr & a 2000hr TBO. I'm not sure if a elect back-up would be cheaper. Let me know your thoughts. I have to confess here, I have not flown a light SE recip for over 25 yrs. I'm a little leary about actual IFR flight without some back up systems. I fly a Cit-X for a company here in Chicago, and I'm amazed at the kind of wx light plane pilots fly in with only one of anything. I guess I've been flying "Big Iron" way too long. I love this 182, and my wife and I are looking forward to flying it back and forth to our place is FL from Chicago. BTW, it took me 4 hrs to get checked out. I forgot just how much fun little airplanes are.
Thanks,

Re: Stby elect vacuum pump.
If your 182 is flown only Part 91, AC 91-75, Subject: Attitude Indicator, dated 6/25/03, authorizes the replacement of the turn and bank indicator or turn coordinator with a second attitude indicator powered by a power source independent from the primary attitude indicator.
Since your primary AI is vacuum powered, I'd seriously consider replacing your T&B or TC with an electrically powered AI.

Or...you could take the cheap route--see link below.
