'61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

'61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

I recently bought a '61 182D with the old type of door/window on the passenger side i.e., the window is fixed in place.

Does anyone know what options are available for turning it into an operable window, short of buying another door/window? Ideally I would like a window that is hinged at the top, similar to the pilot's window.

I assume that some retrofit parts or kits are available that I could use on the existing door. I found a bubble-type kit available from Great Lakes Aero Products, although I didn't see any pictures. I think I would rather have a flat window, even if the bubble-type is able to be opened.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Phil

I have a similar situation with a 172-K.  Short of finding a used door which I would suspect would be in short supply is there a solution.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

Norm Ellis at (949) 830-0743 has an STC to install an opening window in the right door of several earlier single engine Cessna models. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover any 172s and the earliest 182 it covers is the '62 182E.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

I corresponded with Norm last week and he told me that he was a couple of months away from having the 172 version of the STC approved.  If I hear anything else I'll post, but the easiest way to show support is to drop Norm an email or call.  Stan has posted Norm's number above, his email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Sure would be nice if the C-175 would also be covered.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

So it looks like an STC will be available.  That is the paperwork that makes the change legal.  Where do you get the parts or kit to do the actual change????

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

Let me introduce myself, I am John With Great Lakes Aero Products, we make the Bubble Door windows or Domed windows for many of the 172's 180's, 182's and 185's etc.

Phil, If you look at the Great Lakes Aero Products, page again, and click on "Pictures" next to the thickness column, you should come up with some pictures.  The column should be blue.

I notice there is what seems to be some interest in an opening window on the passenger side of the aircraft, where there was a fixed window originally.

What exactly are you looking to do with the passenger side opening window.  I imagine there are many uses and reasons as to why you would want it, but we may come up with a solution other than buying an entire door.

I am able to put a small vent window on almost any side window in your aircraft, and get the part PMA'd pretty easily.  If there is enough interest in something I am willing to invest some time to make it possible...

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

My interest in a opening passenger window is for photography.  Having a small vent on the side probably would not work.  On the pilot side I disconnect the retaining strap and the window will fold up against the wing in flight.  Sometimes other people take the pictures and I have to put them in the left seat.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

I remember talking with Norm Ellis about modifiying my 62 C172. As I recall, it was going to cost somewhere around $3000.00. The door was to be replaced. My wife could not justify that kind of expenditure.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

I appreciate this artice..some good information.

I also have a question.  I just bought a 1963 C182F that is equipped with an FAA approved fly-out skydive door on the RH side.  I am looking to purchase or trade that door for a standard RH door that would fit the 1963 model...opening window isn't a priority at this point.

The flyout door could be useful for someone looking to take pictures.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

I replaced the hinge pins on both my doors with spring cotters. The doors are quickly and easily removable, and makes working in the cabin area a lot easier. I got a letter from my local FSDO saying it was OK to fly with one door removed. It is great for photography as long as you don't have to go too far from where you left the door. There is a lot more noise and some wind buffeting inside with the right door removed, as I recall it is not as bad with the left door off.

Re: '61 Skylane: Operable (non-fixed) passenger window

I received an email from Norm Ellis last week telling me that the STC for the right opening window on 172's has been approved. The STC costs $750 from Norm, which includes a copy of the STC, Master Data List, Installation Manual which includes the Parts List, Instruction for Continue Airworthiness and
Airworthiness Limitations.Doesn't include parts or labor, which you have to find/fabricate yourself. If you're on the west coast, you can have it done by Norm at Long Beach for under $3500.

Don't think I'm going to do it myself, it's a bit steep having to then contract out or do the work, however for all you that are interested, Norm's contact information is;
