Mag's and FBO's

My 172 broke down at another airport...mag problems.
A good friend who is also an AP, picked me up, flew me home, then picked up a new mag and flew back down to install while sitting on the tarmac.
The FBO management came out and ran him off. At least they told him no other mechanics could work at that airport as they had the
exclusive. This is not listed as a private airport, so I assume they are Federally funded/controlled.
Since he didnt want to put me into a contentious situation, he left.
Are there any "shade tree lawyers" in this organization?
How can the FBO prevent someone from repairing an airplane if requested by the owner?
Any thoughts?

We have a similar situation at 3 local airports, all of which have FBO's claiming exclusive rights.

We also have an AP who works freelance on all 3 airports.
At one airport he only works for members of the flying club (of which he is membership secretary).

At the other 2 airports he helps friends who request his help.

That seems to be enough to cut through all of the red tape.

Next time someone says they have an exclusive, ask them to show you their contract with the airport authority.

I think I'd be inclined to let them complain and claim all the exclusiveness they want. It's not likely you'll be breaking any
criminal laws. I would have continued until ordered to stop by
some kind of government official.
If you were based there, Im sure things may be different, as part of your rental agreement.
What can they do? Evict you?
if the FBO operator has any "powers" other than being "exclusive", I'd sure like to know what they would be...
Boy!! I'd be pissed! (can I say that? tongue )

I wouldn't think they could legally do that. They may have an exclusive which to me means that your friend can't open a shop there.

I'd run amok on the FBO and have your frienddo the work anyway, I can't see that there is much they can do about it.

If the local FBO is so great then why would they complain? Most GOOD AP's around here are so busy they turn away business from non regular customers. If that outfit you faced is so desperate to keep others out I would ask them why and to prove to me what makes them so "exclusive!"
