trip to bahamas
Re: trip to bahamas
I made the same plan several years ago, from Calif. Weather kept me in Austin for a week.
You will want to arrange for water survival gear. I was going to rent the stuff in Fla. a LOT cheaper than buying. I think I got a radio station license from the FCC for the plane because I was leaving the
contiguous US. I'm really sorry I can't expound on what a great time I had in the islands :-(.
Fortunately, I had a pretty good list of "Plan B"s. Austin being one of them.
It should be a great way to spend a vacation!

Re: trip to bahamas
Im sorry to say that I only got as far as Austin, due to really horrible weather in the gulf states. Spent a good hour in solid but smooth IFR prior to Austin. Spent a week there with relatives.
I was in my 182 with long range tanks.
I started my planning with Sectionals overlapping on 3 of my living room walls and a pair of VFR Wall Planning Charts, taped together. Stretched a string from Point A to Point B then studied the charts for Restricted areas, MOAs, terrain, airports for refuel & overnight stops. AOPAs airport handbook came in pretty handy. I did two overnight stops enroute to Austin. The first was due to a very late start on day one.
Through ads I read in assorted flying magazines, I wasn't concerned about a lack of fuel in the Bahamas. There are several private/restricted airstrips on the islands. I don't recall making any plans for customs...I DO recall meeting with the Customs guys at Tucson on the way back because I stopped at and spent a couple of nights in Jaurez, MX. (They have a really nice and not busy airport there). I had to buy a Customs sticker for the plane... about $25. That was supposed to be done BEFORE leaving or entering the US. Filing an international flight plan should have been done also...as I was told while re-entering the US.
I was planning on 3 to 5 overnighters, depending on my departure times, winds and how I felt about it.
I was going to rent water survival gear in or around Miami.
I had made no actual plans/reservations in the islands as we were "winging" the whole trip.
I'd call my nearest airport Customs office and ask about a current year sticker and requirements for checking in (and out?) with Customs, both in the US and the Bahamas. I'd then talk to Flight Service well ahead of time about exactly how to file the proper flight plan prior to leaving the US, even though no prior permission is required for private/non-commercial flights.

Re: trip to bahamas
Suggest you go to following web site and order the Bahamas Pilot Handbook. I have made trips to the Bahamas from Dallas, TX over the past 15 years and found this book to be the best guide. It will answer all your questions.

Re: trip to bahamas
I flew back into the US from Mexico, once. I was directed to taxi to the customs parking area and stay in the plane. I was approached by two huge unhappy uniformed fellows. I was asked if I had anything to declare. MY response..."YES< everything in the plane!" They didn't seem to care about much other than fruits & veggies.
I had a couple apples, banannas and grapes in a cooler that were all purchased in Calif. They gave me the choice of eating the apples on the spot or throwing them away. The banannas & grapes didn't seem to be a problem.
Apparantly, the concern is bugs & disease.
