172H push to talk switch

172H push to talk switch

The p-t-t switch on our left yoke has gone from intermittent to "0."  Does anyone have experience with a suitable replacement, or a viable repair?  One avionics shop mentioned they use a syringe to inject something referred to as "joy juice" that allegedly cleans the contactors. Is this for real??

Re: 172H push to talk switch

I had that same problem a few years back.
I don't have a vivid recollection of what I did, exactly.
I do recall unscrewing from the yolk, dinking around with it.
I used some spray electrical contact cleaner and a shot of
Water Displacement, formula # forty.

I suppose you could have a faulty connection at the other end of the wires or a bad wire.  And I'm assuming that your microphone works ok.

I guess it had some corrosion buildup, probably from sweatty hands.
Flying is such scary stuff!!

Re: 172H push to talk switch

The switch most likely went bad. Just get a new one, that one may just push out from the bottom if you loosen the cable and it is soldered on. (Not sure of your exact configuration) Your avionics shop should have the correct switch probably less than $8. Or you could try Radio Shack probably $2. If that is the original switch it most likely served its time.

Part# 11-12100  Aircraft Spruce - $12.95.
It isn't worth screwing around with it.

Re: 172H push to talk switch

But this is a certified aircraft - and for another $10.95 you can buy a certified part that doesn't invalidate your insurance.
So I don't understand why you would go uncertified to save $10.95.

Thousands? maybe.
But $10.95? Why?

Re: 172H push to talk switch

I know it's an old post but wanted to respond to it anyway.
The radio shack switches aside from being cheap and unapproved are cheap in manufacture. Don't waste your time with it. I on the otherhand went to the other extreem. I ordered a Cessna part. $100.00 worth of part. However, when I did a side by side comparison the Cessna switch (S1985-1) was the most durable. When you pushed on it you felt the click, even through a glove. With the radioshack switch you couldn't even tell if it was making contact, and the aircraft spruce (sigtronics) switch while you could feel the switch make, it wasn't as strong as the Cessna switch. My bottom line is that if you rent or lease back your aircraft to a flight school or fly alot put the heavy duty switch in. You'll be saving labor charges in the long run due to replacing switches.
