I need to replace a NARCO NAV12 in my C-172L. I found the INS-422 made by VAL Aionics on the internet and a new one goes for around $2,000. It has the marker beacons built in and seems as if it a reasonably priced VOR/LOC/ILS system.
Does anyone have any experience with INS-422?
One of the problems with these low cost units is service. Nobody can fix them if something goes wrong. Factory only! Another problem, including the com unit, is when you turn the unit off and on, you have to set the frequency again. No internal memory! Also not TSO'd.
Basically you get what you pay for!
I installed an INS 422 in an older Bonanza and the owner is very happy with the unit.He flies IFR from AZ to TX 2 or 3 times a month and has had no complaints. We took out the old NAV12 and popped in the VAL unit in under 4 hours. The unit is TSO'ed see their web site http://www.valavionics.com/p_ins422.html and in my experience, they are very reliable. As a point of fact, most manufacturers are moving away from field repairs because of liability issues. I have been told by King and Garmin that they will limit what their dealers can do on some models of their equipment.
