Many of you probably know this, but for those that don't -
The Garmin 196 can now have the software updated to v 4.1
which then allows you to upgrade to the latest database ($35.00) which then allows you to add the same terrain avoidance ($35.00) as the new 296.
So for $70.00 your 196 runs the same software as the 296 - just not in colour!

Just found out it gives obstacle avoidance but not terrain avoidance

FYI. If you download the update you will lose any of the personal informaion, i.e. routes, landings, waypoints, etc. that you may have in the 196. For some this is a big deal for other a non-event..

I just flew 6000 miles in my 185. The obstacle warning is worth every penny. It gives a 5 mile notification of an obstacle within 500' of your altitude.

Unfortunately the obstacle database stops at the US border and I'm in Canada. It would be nice to have if it covered this area
