Powerflow Exhaust for 180 HP 172

Powerflow Exhaust for 180 HP 172

<HTML>Has anyone installed a Powerflow exhaust on a 180HP 172 and have reliable numbers for performance?

I haven't seen any good before and after performance numbers published, just some say it works great, and one guy was disappointed. I have good before speeds, rates, and fuel flows but it's pricey without more indications of gains.

Thanks

Re: Powerflow Exhaust for 180 HP 172

<HTML>Jim -

Power Flow's only published dynamometer testing were done using a Cessna 172 muffler system on a 160 HP Lycoming O-320 engine.  Most of the 180 HP C172 conversions use the identical muffler system to the Cessna 172 except for making the headers/risers longer by 1.07 inches in total.

Since the exhausts between the two different displacement enginers are virtually the same, testing numbers for a larger engine (trying to pump more air through the same size restrictions as the smaller)  will result in at least the same gains, if not slightly more.  More air through same size = decrease in efficiency.   A 23.75 hp gain (which is what Power Flow got) on a 160 hp application would, by engineering estimate could result in approx. 25-26 hp gain on the 180 hp engine - using the same muffler system.

Power Flow's fixed-pitch customers have reported gains that are essentially identical for both the O-320 and O-360 172s.  Some of the reported range of improvements with the Power Flow System for the C172 (150,160 and 180 HP) are: 50-120 static rpm gain; 125-300 Feet per minute rate of climb increase; 1.3-2.4 gallons per hour less fuel flow.

Of course no two engines ever behave exactly the same - hence the range of customer reported gains.   Your "risk" is reduced to almost zero by Power Flow's 60 day satisfaction guarantee.  If any customer isn't satisfied within 60 days after installation they can return the system for a refund of the purchase price.  Only 1% of PFS customers have taken advantage of this policy (for various reasons.)

You can also call one of Power Flow's product advisors who will be happy to refer you to several of our customers who have volunteered to talk about their airplane and their Power Flow installation experience.  (1 US POWERFLOW)

Any other Power Flow owners care to report their results here?

Thanks

Re: Powerflow Exhaust for 180 HP 172

<HTML>I put the Powerflo on my 1969 c-172 - It has a ram 160 hp conversion and stol upgrades.
The powerflow exhaust is incredible - I will sound like one of their brochures if I get started - Static and climb improved substantially - I later repitched the prop 2 inches to take advantage of additional cruise - I dont think that I would repitch the prop if I did it over (I spent about $300 on that) but it is easier to stay down from redline under heavy throttle.

The biggest difference is that with the family and full fuel - even on a hot day - we can climb substantially faster at a higher speed to cruise alt usually to 6000 - 10000ft and the trip is much more enjoyable for all passengers, - much more enjoyable -
than it was when we bumped along on a hot day with a week climb rate and a headwind trying to get to a smooth cruise altitude - I also have much more confidence going up and over or around building clouds - because I know that we have done it and can do it - without hesitation - on trips through Wisconsin, east to Reading PA, and south to Alabama

I would make this conversion again in a heartbeat - it makes my 172 much more useable - like a family "car".</HTML>
