The 172B had an oil cooler for the seaplane version of the airplane, check your flight manual or parts catalog for it. The cooler fit so that the hole under the prop in the nose cowl provider air flow. I have a seaplane oil cooler that I plan to put on, it's original equipment so won't require a lot of paperwork. I had a few time last summer I was so close to red line on the oil temp that I think the cooler would be a good idea. In the winter I could just block it to get teh oil temp up into the normal range.
