Cessna Auto pilot

Cessna Auto pilot

MY 172 RG is being delivered tomorrow by the ferry pilot and I am told the Autopilot is Inop -- does anyone have an idea of what the most common issue is with the autopilot being out and what it would be that needs to be repaired?

You don't give much info about situation. Did it work before the ferry pilot picked it up?

First find out what auto pilot you have. Then check operation manual procedures to see if it powers up properly if at all. Then try to go thru preflite check. It may be something simple as a switch, or connection.

Re: Cessna Auto pilot

Could be either the computer (in the radio stack) or the actutator in the wing.  Hard to tell which without the proper test equipment.

The actutator in the wing has some power transistors that like to blow, and they're by now hard to come by and very expensive if you buy them from an avionics shop ($90-$180 each, and it takes 4).  There are some sources in the electronics industry, but they genrally have a minimum order amount.

Try this link for a good description of the autopilot and its workings:

Re: Cessna Auto pilot

Kind of an old post, but Shaun, if you are still out there, did you ever isolate the problem with your autopilot?

I am considering trying to put a used ARC 300A in my C-150, and was curious to know if your unit was also a 300A?

The information about the actuator having transistor issues may have convinced me not to even attempt it due to the difficulty (and apparent expense) of getting to these and replacing them.
