Since this Travel category seems kind of quiet, I thought I would share some information about a nice weekend fly-in just held in Eagle River, Wisconsin (EGV).
We learned of the Fly-In/Blues Fest from the Wisconsin DOT website. It was started a while back by one of the local muskie fishing guides, Joe Bucher. Joe has hosted a number of outdoor televisions shows, and is somewhat of a local celebrity.
He also plays in a blues band call Joe Bucher and the Top Raiders (Top Raider being one of his many patented musky baits).
We flew in on Saturday afternoon and were able to grab a courtesy car from the FBO. After checking in to the local Super 8 Hotel, we headed back to the airport for the festivities, which started at 5pm. An outstanding band began at 5:30pm, called Cadillac Pete & The Heat. They played non-stop in a large hangar until 7:30pm, and had people dancing in the aisles.
Excellent BBQ ribs were served, along with plenty of refreshments. It was rather warm, so it was particularly tough watching my wife enjoy a cold beer, while I slurped down bottled water (I was the designated pilot).
Joe's band started about 8:30 or so. We turned in fairly early, but understand the party went until midnight.
Next years festival is slated for the 1st week in August. Tie down fees were $3 per night, or free if you buy fuel. There are newly paved intersecting runways, along with modern FBO facilities. It is a beautiful area, with lots to see and do. The people we met were all having a great time. You won't be disappointed if you make the trip.
