I am planning to add a EGT to my C 172 (1968).

as you are all way more experienced then me, what make/model do you suggest (price should not be more then
$ 500/max)?

Cessna approved EGT's are made by Alcor and you should be able to get everything you need for under 300 based on some good searches.

thanks for info, what I am looking for is a digitial egt wth a digital readout that scrolls from one cylinder to the next, I have seen one, just can not remember the name of the
thing.

I don't know if they're any good but I see these on E-bay all the time in 4 and 6 cylinder models for under $300 with probes, wiring, STC, etc. Aerospace Logic EGT-100-6P

Their ad says they do the step mode (sequence through the cylinders) and have an automode that automatically goes to the hottest cylinder. It doesn't have logging capability but looks like it will give you a digital display of the EGT for not much money.
