Sheet Metal Alteration

Sheet Metal Alteration

Looking to replace the sheet metal on the top of our 170B, has anyone done such a major alteration? Also information on the 337 Form? Thank You

Re: Sheet Metal Alteration

Eula,
Top of what? Cabin, wings, stabilizer, everything? It is not an alteration, it is a major repair. 337 form will be required. As for the actual work involved be sure the shop has the personnel with the experience and the equipment, especially if your reskinning the wings.

Re: Sheet Metal Alteration

Del, The Top of the Cabin would need a patch on the left side over the left door. A patch would look awful, so I would like to put on new skin. This is where the wing is attched to the aircraft, but on top of the cabin not the wing. The rib strip will not cover it up. Have you done a Major job like this?? Thank You

Re: Sheet Metal Alteration

Eula,
Yes, I've done it many times and would also recommend replacement of the skin verses a doubler. To do the job properly, using all original solid rivets (no blind rivets), you should remove the windshield, and of course the headliner, antennas, and etc. Some have done it with the wings on, but I would remove them because it will allow the cabin top change to go much faster; one man for most of rivet work instead of two. Then when the wings are reinstalled we replace the rubber fuel lines, SCAT ducting and wing attach hardware, which happen to be those items that get overlooked or avoided due to the difficulty of replacement. You can see our ad in the COO publication.

Re: Sheet Metal Alteration

Hey Everybody,
Last year, I visited Del's shop in Arkansas.  He is a great guy and has the nicest wing jig I have ever seen.
From what I have seen of his work, he does an excellent job.

Re: Sheet Metal Alteration

Del, Thank You so much, I will replace the top. I didn't want a patch. Do you know where I could get a Service Manual for a Cessna 170 B 1952 year? I have a Parts Manual from Univair that I just received, they do not have a Service Manual. Thank You Again Eula
