172D TBO

172D TBO

I have a 1963 172D with a Continental 0-300-D engine.

Anyone know what the recommended TBO is for that engine?

Re: 172D TBO

TCM Service Information Letter SIL98-9A, "Time Between Overhaul Periods", March 28, 2003, states that the TBO for the O-300-D is 1800 hours or twelve years.

For aircraft operated under Part 91, the manufacturer's recommended TBO is not mandatory.

Before going past TBO - check your insurance policy.

Re: 172D TBO

Exactly which block of fine print on the insurance policy would be most likely to contain any prhobitions against flying beyond TBO?  I'm well under on the hours but getting close on years.

Or would it be more obvious?  I don't remember reading anything about TBO but then the policy did seem pretty barren and straight forward for such a document.

Re: 172D TBO

TBO is only a recommendation that as a Part 91 pilot you can choose to ignore. I do not believe that it comes into play with your insurance company unless you are doing commercial operations. I ran my 300D engine 220 hours past TBO. Nowhere did my insurance company ask for my airplane engine hours. They were interested in my hours only.

Re: 172D TBO

I just renewed my A/C insurance and they wanted to know MY horus but they had absolutely no questions about my airplane.  I thought they'd at least ask a couple of questions about it.

Re: 172D TBO

I just bought a 1961 172B with a O-300D that just had a major overhaul after 2500 hours and 27 years on the engine since previous overhaul.  Granted the engine was in California and flew close to 100 hours a year but the crank checked out still standard  and thats after 5200 hours on the bottom end since maufacture.  I can't say the top end faired as well It took new set of cylinders about every 10 years. some of that could be the heat and some could be the use of 100LL.
