ripped elevator skin on 1977 172
Recently one of the planes on our flight school line was found with a ripped right elevator skin inboard next to the rudder about 1/3 of the way up from the trailing edge. The rip was about 4" long. At first look it seemed as if someone pulled up on the elevator from between the skin when the gust lock was in. I spoke with a mechanic who said he had seen this before and it was a weak point in the aircraft in 1977. He said that they can rip by themselves, and Cessna installed a baffle plate in later models to alleviate this poblem. Has anyone heard of this or know of any documentation supporting it?

I've seen something similar on a couple of planes from parking at my flight school. Is there any damage on the corner?
On the two damaged elevator's I saw, the elevator was caught along the ground while parking the plane (pushing down on the horiz. stab. and turning). Problem solved by having all students put the control lock in before parking!
Re: ripped elevator skin on 1977 172
By the way, you should never, never, ever push down on the horozontal stablizer to move a cessna aircraft, as it causes damage to the main spar, there is an A/D out on this if u find cracks or if you find no cracks in the spar(caused from pushing down on stablizer) cessna puts out a kit to reinforce the spar as per the A/D pertaining to this problem. Always use the appropriate tow bar hooked to the app place on the nose gear fork when moving the aircraft,Thanks, being as nice as i can, Bill.
