I have purchased manuals from Essco in the past.  I don't know how their prices compare with Cessna.  Their web site is www.esscoaircraft.com, and you can order on-line.  I will probably be purchasing these as well, as I just purchased a 78 C-172 myself.  Need to sell a 150 before I start spending money on the 172, though.

C-172 1977-86 Maint Manual   P/N P696-12     $211.20

If you can get both from Cessna for $350, it is a better deal.  I'll check Cessna before I buy as well.  When I bought the 150 manuals from Essco, they were a lot cheaper.

I just bought these from Cessna.  I was suprised to find they had the better price.  Also, there are some supplements to the service manual that were not available from Essco.  Thanks for the info.
