Hawk XP 210hp STC
Re: Hawk XP 210hp STC
Bradley:
For anyone who has never flown the 172 Xp's, what an experience they are missing. A 172 with 210 hp! What a screamer!!
Have had my Hawk now for 6 years and finally put the 210 hp package on 5 months ago. Since I am an IA I was able to do it all myself and sign it off. Make sure your IA fills out 2 337's, one for modifying the engine and one for modifying the aircraft, because you are actually performing two STC's, both of which are included in the data package. The STC owner, Mr. Brad Isham is very helpful with any questions your mechanic would have for the upgrade.
I did not go with the digital tach, didnt feel the need for it. I sent the prop and governor to Aircraft Propeller Service in Wheeling IL, they are familiar with doing the mod to the prop and governor.
You WILL notice the improvement on takeoff, and there is a five minute max usage at 2800 rpm, then simply reduce the prop pitch back about 2600 rpm. You will also notice while taxing that at idle there is not nearly as much forward movement as before. More throttle needed to get it going because of the prop angle adjustment.
If you have any other questions, Id be happy to try and answer them.
Thanks Sal S

You are correct, Cessna derated the engine from 210hp to 195hp as they came off the line. Application of the Isham STC just brings the aircraft/engine back to its original operating specs.
One other thing you need to know. I verified this with our local FSDO. IAW FAR 61.31 (f), you will need an endorsement from a flight instructor for a high performance rating. As crazy as this sounds, I had to get an endorsment even though I have several hundred hours flying this aircraft. So now you can officially log high performance time!

Re: Hawk XP 210hp STC
Well, I finally got my plane out of annual, which is an other story. Where they found numerous other problems, but I had the Isham STC installed at the same time. Everyone with a Hawk XP needs that STC. Oh my goodnes, I thought my plane climbed before the STC was installed, it is truely amazing.
Re: Hawk XP 210hp STC
I have the 210HP IO-360 in my 175- which is the founder of the hawk XP's type certificate. It performs very well. I have the IO-360-C which is not limited to the 5 minute limit as far as I can tell, the TCM datasheet says it is rated for 2800RPM max continuous operation. I am doing some extensive repairs after an engine mount firewall failure, and I am considering going to the XP cowl to get the cowl flaps. Is anyone close to oklahoma with an XP that I could look at to see how I might install the flap controls in my 175?
Thank You,
