EGT guage and probe fitment
EGT guage and probe fitment
Wondering if i can get so help on fitting an EGT probe to my c 172 D2A (160hp) engine.
I have just purchased a second hand probe and guage in near new condition and have no instructions.
Which cylinder in best to monitor, where on exhaust riser is the best place to put it.
It is a standard Cessna guage and probe(alcor)
Many thanks
Re: EGT guage and probe fitment
give alcor a call with the p/n of the unit you purchased and tell them you lost the paperwork for it. you will need it anyway because if you dont already have an egt system in the airplane you will need to fill out the Faa Form 337. the stc paperwork comes with the gauge assy. also as it is a used "servicable" part I would give them the P/N on the probe and have them verify that this is the proper probe for that gauge. it is not a one size fits all situation. also, before you go to the trouble of putting in a possibly questionable gauge and probe I recommend testing it first. This can be done with a handheld propane torch. just as the probe starts to get a dark red color the gauge should start to rise. carefull not to get the probe too hot as it can melt.

Go to ALCOR site: http://www.alcorinc.com/
all the info you may need is there including Phone numbers if necessary.

Re: EGT guage and probe fitment
Many thanks. Went to the website and found most of the information needed. I am a LAME but 99% of my work has been on gas turbine powered aircraft. Am also a pilot and have recently purchased this 172 with the O-320 160hp engine. The alcor information wasn't able to gice me the best cylinder to put it in. I know it should go in the one that leans first. I gather it would be one of the rear ones. For other peoples experience and/or previous installations which would be the best cylinder. Many thanks
Re: EGT guage and probe fitment
unfortunatly there really isnt a good way to determine the leanest cylinder before installing the probe. this is due to the fact that a carburated engine doesnt always get the fuel deliverd to each cylinder the same every time. partly due to changine atmospheric conditions but more so the design of the induction system. the induction system is horribly ineffecient. sometime if you get a chance to see one of those induction systems when removed for overhaul you will be surprised at the crudeness of it.
recommend looking at the Cessna installation in the maintenance manual and see if they show it in a particular cylinder.
Re: EGT guage and probe fitment
The best place to install temp probes is the hottest cylinder. On 4 bangers it's the rear (on the side with oil cooler may be hottest).
For 6, it is middle cylinders, because it is in radiant heat from other cylinders.
The point is to know the *maximum* heating of the engine, and to run the engine in a safe range.
You cannot be be 100% sure what is hottest point unless you have a multi point temp sensor, but generally the guide will be close to hottest, if not the hottest.
