Which Speed Mod Makes the Most Sense?
Which Speed Mod Makes the Most Sense?
Hello Fellow Members:
Most of us have a limited flying budget, and therefore upgrades to our aircraft are considered very carefully.
If you had to choose a SINGLE after-market speed mod for your Cessna, what would it be? I would like to get the best bang for my buck, and some of the marketing hype is difficult to decipher. A first-hand report from you folks would be most helpful.
Thanks much.

You didn't say what year you had, "M" available over three years. Also number of hours to be flown per year.
Probably the later style wheel and Brake fairings if you need to replace or add them. If not then maybe the gap seals.
I would rather make sure I had reliable avionics than just trying to save maybe 10 minutes on a 300 mile trip.

The aircraft is a 1975, although most every STC is designated by model number, not manufacturing year. I fly about 100 hours per year.
The gap seals seem to make the most sense to me, provided they actually do what's claimed. (Plus they look nice)
Amen on the avionics upgrades. Just one of many upgrades on the wish list.
Thanks for the input.

I made two speed mods. 1st the Pen Yan 180 HP 2nd the Powerflow exhaust. If on a budget I would do the Powerflow. Both brought my 79 N model to a 132Kts True. I cruise anywhere from 125 to 130Kts. They also increased my useful from 2300lbs to 2550lbs. Not Bad. It's a good flying machine.

In your question you want the SINGLE mod that would give you the most bang for your buck, right? I do not know how much money we are talking about here, but I would choose vortex generators. They are affordable and fairly easy and quick to install with their templates. Good tip: read the latest Aviation Consumer about VG's. Its their #1 choice for SINGLE, most bang for the buck speed mod too.
Re: Which Speed Mod Makes the Most Sense?
1. Powerflow exhaust
2. Garmin portable gps 296 or 396
Static power, climb, and cruise, and get you where you are going.
there are very few mods that give you a real increase in power at the prop.
the Garmin will get you there the fastest and safest (route, terrain, -weather with the 396, and safety)

Re: Which Speed Mod Makes the Most Sense?
RICH, I SEE WHERE YOU HAVE THE 180 AND THE POWERFLOW. WHICH POWER FLOW(SHORT STACK OR LONG TUBE)? AND WHAT INCREASE IN SPEED DID YOU SEE AFTER THE POWER FLOW? I UNDER STAND IT GIVES YOU A 100/150 RPM STAIC. IF SO COULDN'T WE REPITCH THE PROP TO BRING TO BACK TO WHERE IT WAS AND THEN GET MORE SPEED.I HAVE A 77 WITH THE AIRPLANES 180 CONVERSION AND FAP GAP SEALS ALREADY.I AM SATISFIED WITH THE CLIMB NOW I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR MORE SPEED.
