Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

A group of Cessna pilots are putting together the first Cessna mass arrival to Oshkosh this year.

They started a website for it at www.C2O.us and it looks pretty fun.

Anyone do this kind of thing before?  From what I have read the Bonanzas and Mooney aircraft clubs have done this.  It's about time someone did this for Cessna.

Re: Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

After having experienced the mass arrivial of the Mooney's and Beechcraft last year I think this practice is not worth the effort.  What happened is a large number of Mooney's arrived and saturated the ability of the handlers to move them on the ground.  The field was shut down for at least an hour.  I was in a holding pattern over Rush Lake (with almost full tanks)and there were another hundred or so Beechcraft with me mostly with low fuel.

There was hollering, swearing and screaming threats to go to the tower frequency to ball out the controllers  and similar utterings.  The approach controllers to their credit controlled (but barely) the Bonanza's who where threatening to get even with the Mooneys.  Many of the planes were low on fuel and tried to land immediately at Oshkosh.  They were told to go to other fields to fuel up.

After witnessing that spectacle and the overcrowding it caused I could not see any practical purpose for a mass arrival. A RV6 crashed several planes behind me because of overcrowding in the circuit. It ended up inverted on the runway.  It was a dangerous situation.

The arrival procedures easily accomodate a steady and orderly flow of traffic.  When you try to push a lot of planes through in a short period bad things happen.

Re: Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

I would say that the mass arrivals cause more disruption for the non-participants.  Having not directly participated in a mass arrival I could not comment on it's affect.

In reflection there was two mass arrivals.  One when the Mooney's arrived and a second when the airport opened after it was shut down for an extended period because of the Mooney arrival.  There was such a pent up demand to get on the ground that it became dangerous in my opinion.

Having never flown into Oshkosh before I asked a experienced observer I met about the arrivials I was a part of.  I thought the traffic was probably of normal intensity.  His comment was that he had never seen it as busy as the time I landed.  That was the Saturday late afternoon.  Shortly after I landed the runway was shut down so a crane could remove the upside down RV6.  I believe he was forced to slow down and stalled above the runway.  I think the pilot was helicoptered out.

Re: Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

Ron and all,

I am the Cessna Lead this year for Cessnas to Oshkosh, www.C2O.us.

I was there that Saturday afternoon, holding over Rippon.  If you got in before the RV6 crashed, you got in before we did as they briefly opened the airport and shut it down again when the plane crashed.  Both the Bonanzas and Mooney groups had come in and shut the airport down.

I held for almost 2 hours.  You are right about how nuts it was coming in after that.

Yes, the language was not what you would normally here at an airport.  Kind of hard for them to know who was saying what with 300+ planes circling in less than a 10nm circle.

There are several reasons why we have chosen to organize a Cessna mass arrival.

First, to respond to your post, I think flying in a mass arrival is a lot safer than what we saw last year.

Second, we are not going to shut down the Bonanzas or Mooney mass arrivals.

Third, the only way to park together is to fly in together.

Fourth, we want to have just as much fun, if not more, than the other groups.

These are some of the reasons we are doing this.  Heck, if you can't beat them, join them!

We are having a BBQ on Wednesday night, July 26th.  We currently have 16 sponsors who have donated great prizes to include an EI engine monitor, fuel flow computer, seminar tickets, etc.  These door prizes will be distributed at the BBQ, each BBQ ticket gives you a chance to win.  You must pre-register, no walk ins.

Hope to see you there, whether you camp in "Cessna Base Camp" (also approved by EAA) or not.

By the way, you don't have to fly in to join us in Cessna Base Camp, you only have to get there before they fill in our rows and pre-register on the C2O site.  Then when you land have a sign reading "Cessna Group/GAC" and come have a great week. :-)

Re: Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

I join with the wet blanket group.  I got to Oshkosh two days before the start and flew to Oshkosh only to be turned away at the last minute for a mass landing of Mooneys.  The
Ripon radio guy said a 20 minute wait.    I did not believe him and flew to Fon du Lac and waited half an hour. I could not pick up the radio signal from there, so I flew back after half an hour.  I wasted gasoline because they were still unloading the sky with those Mooooooneys.  I did this four times!  Then the field was open. But an RV went upside down and they had to respond to that.  Finally open but guess what?  Curfew had arrived.  We could not land at Oshkosh anyway.  About 100 airplanes went VFR good luck fellas.  Find yourself an airport that's not closed.  This was far more dangerous than being handled by skilled controllers watching all of us pile into Oshkosh.  We were
given Pilot Control to Fon du Lac because the tower was still not opened. What a goofed up mess.  What started it? Mass landing by Mooneys.  Never Again. First come first served is by far the most equitable and safe way to dribble into Oshkosh.

Re: Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

You nailed it Lee!

That's precisely the beauty of the COO Fly-in. Fly into an airport that has lots of room, take in a few programs, and then ride a nice motor coach into Oshkosh on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday.

This year will be held at Stevens Point, Wisconsin for the first time.

Way less hassle, and nice people to boot.

Re: Oshkosh Cessna Fly-in

First in first served only works if they do that for everyone.

Because they don't (mass arrivals) it doesn't work that way and as you saw last year, you are out of luck.

If you can't beat them, join them.

Besides, it will be a lot of fun and we can actually land more planes quicker with a mass arrival.  This is because we can plan and space the planes to land at a very close interval.  With the added training and planning it is also a lot more safer.

The reason I don't want to fly into another airport is because I want to be at Oshkosh.  It just isn't the same having to be bused in and out everyday.  I guess you either like camping under your wing in the North 40 or you don't.  I do, it's a blast. yikes)

Now, for those wanting to come in the normal arrival, 4/5ths of us are actually doing just that.  This year they are giving us the first reserved parking area.  We have 500 slots and they are naming it "Cessna Base Camp."  We only have 100 slots for the mass arrival.  This means 4 times as many planes will come in the normal way and not in the mass arrival.  So, you can have your cake and eat it to or pie or however you like it.

Come on, this is a chance for you to come and camp with 499 of your closest Cessna buddies.

Did I mention the great sponsors and door prizes?  It'll be a blast!

Cessna Base Camp is for everyone, but you have to sign up on the C2O site.  This is because EAA needs to know a number.  Yes, we have up to 500, but if only 200 sign up they will are not going to hold out 500 slots.  They also don't want to reserve 200 slots and once we arrive have every Cessna owner want to join up and go over.  So, the only way for them to do it is to have everyone sign up in one location (www.C2O.us) and monitor tail numbers.

Again, it'll be a blast!  500 Cessnas all in one spot camping together all at the same time.
