Re: Avion panel - removal for paint?
Stan Cooper redid his panel and yokes with the Avion products a while back. See below. A forum search via "Avion" will reveal others.

Re: Panel Overlay
Four years ago, I took the plunge and installed an Avion Research [www.avion.com] panel in my '63 172D.
"Before" and "after" photos are at http://home.earthlink.net/~k4drd/index.html
The panel is STC'd, powdercoated aluminum, and makes the airplane a real joy to fly.
Re: Avion panel - removal for paint?
Avion does very nice panels. Keep in mind they can sometimes be very slow, and you may have to custom fit it in your aircraft and you may have to send them back a few times to get it right.
Powder coating and silk screening is the best way to go when making a new panel in my experiance. Though you really should have an avionics tech install it to make sure it is done properly and safe. I work in Lincoln CA and make custom panels myself. I also clean up the wiring while they are out, its the best time to do it becasue everything is very accessible.
