140 auto pilot

140 auto pilot

auto pilot in my 2001 t182t 140 king with alitude hold and preselect always having problems 1- when it starts up it goes threw all its tests and stop with six dashes ands just stays like that till maybe next time you go flying. problem 2-pitch light on far left comes on [lit up red P ]and pitch fails to work. problem 3-with altidude hold on it slowly loses or gains altidude till alarm goes off [just like the auto pilot not using any pitch control ]
my avionics guy says every thing checks out fine but is in need of a new operating program. any one with problems like this or how they fixed there problems. note = some days it works just fine

so sent auto pilot back to king check out 100% so my AME reinstalls it for me because I am one hour flight for my avionics shop.now it even has more promblems so i am checking in ground test and notice when I push on the control unit my trim works.so we pull the unit out again and find the connector on right side of tray has lose screw tighten it up 3/4 of a turn and she works like a dream

I had my pitch servo replaced in my 1998 182S and the problem was no more- JA Aero(NORMAN)said the servo has had 2or3 updates for your (and my) problem, and he was right.
15 hours trouble free. Daryl M.

Ken,

Check all the other instruments that feed information to the autopilot. I had a similar problem on my C182S and it ended up being a loose connection on my turn coordinator. The connection would work intermittently. Everything checked out on the ground but once in the air, the turn coordinator would flag, unnoticed by me, autopilot would disrupt. Worth checking out.

Hi Ken,

I've run into this same problem on a few of my customers aircraft. You won't believe this but the unit is difficult to get into the rack tight. I had to use a pair of pliers to offer better leverage to the allen wrench. Have a friend push on the face of the unit at the same time to take some of the strain off of the mount screw. Careful not to break it.
