Zaon XRX PCAS
Zaon XRX PCAS
To All;
Now that the Zaon XRX system has been out for a while, I would be interested in hearing from any members that have been using it for a while. I purchased the Surecheck VRX system about a year and a half ago, and would be interested in replacing it with a system that also shows the direction of the traffic. However, before spending the $1800 for a new system, I would like to get recommendations from members that have used it.
Thanks
Jon Plaxton
Re: Zaon XRX PCAS
John,
Firstly, I am amazed that no-one replied on your question in over a month that it's been sitting here on the forum. I finally leaped in last week and bought one, but have not used it yet (my plane is undergoing some work). None of my fly-buddies has one, so I got my information from different sites on internet. I yield great value to organizations like Aviation Consumer and DigitalReviews.net, and they both give the XRX 9/10. I am certainly amazed at exactly how small this unit really is (much smaller that what it looks like on the pics). As soon as I get my plane back, I will test it out - I live in an area where the regional airfield is situated within the airspace of a military base (Class D). Should make for some interesting results...I will post my findings.

Thanks Jakes;
I would be interested in hearing from you once you have had a chance to use it. I did the same kind of inquiry some time ago before I purchased the older VRX unit, which I still use. Because the XRX is so much more expensive but offers the direction information, I would like to know that other members think it worth the investment for the added information/safety. My son recently earned his pilot's license and also uses the plane, and in the busy So. Cal. area this equipment can provide extra peace of mind if it works as advertized.

Re: Zaon XRX PCAS
Hi John,
Sorry for the wait, but my plane is not back from the shop yet. I did not know propeller overhauls can take more than a month?! I expect her to be ready to fly within a week though.
In the meantime, I placed the XRX on the dash of my van while driving. Now I know they say that it would not work due to the bodyframe of the vehicle, but low and behold, I picked up three F-18's (I live near a military base), and could tell in which direction to look for them, how high they were, and whether they were approaching or flying away! Everyone was amazed that I could pin point a spot in the sky where they are coming from, even before one could hear them!
I am now more than ever anxious to see what the XRX will do in the 'real' setting...
Re: Zaon XRX PCAS
OK, the moment of truth finally arrived...
I picked up my plane today from the shop (with her new shiny prop and spinner), and placed the XRX on the glareshield. Configuring the XRX for my specific needs was a snap - I believe I took me under a minute.
While taxiing out to the run-up area, I heard over the radio two planes coming in for full-stops at the airport. As soon as the first guy entered my 6 mile zone, the XRX indicated it as #1 threat 6.0 mile to my left, 1200 feet above me and sinking at 300 feet/min. Not long after that, the #2 threat showed up and similar information was given.
The interesting thing was when #1 crossed mid-field to join the active downwind. The XRX indicated its direction as to the left and to the front of me when it passed above me barely to be seen through my windshield. The position arrows kept on following it as it circled around to final, and then quit calling it a threat once it has landed (transponder to STBY?). Then #2 threat was moved up to #1 threat.
Awesome!!!
My advice? GET ONE!!!
