How Zaon PCAS XRX saved the day...

How Zaon PCAS XRX saved the day...

This is a story I just have to share. I have recently bought a Zaon PCAS XRX, and have flown with it for about a month now. Today I was 11 miles east, inboud to land at my home regional airport, doing 2500 AGL (we live in a Controlled Zone D and have to stay below 2900 AGL). I heard another plane take off from my home regional airport, and tell them he was departing to the east. ATC advised him of my presence and position, and told him to stay below 2900 (because for Zone D).

One thing to remember, is that in this particular zone, the east outboud and inbound routes are the very same line. ATC did not, however, tell him (or me) to alter to a different altitude, and did not deviate him (or me)to a different heading than the ususal inbound/outboud route for this zone...a close encounter (or worse) was in the making...

I realized this development, and got on the ether on both the tower and regional frequencies to declare my current position again. No change in ATC's plan. Not before long, my PCAS XRX showed him as 5.8 miles ahead of me, then 5.6, then 5.4, and at exactly the same altitude that I flying!

My eyes pierced the sky as I was scanning for him, but the sun was reflecting on the clouds which made it almost impossible to spot him. I once again called tower and told them that I do not have a visual of the outbound plane, but my collision advisory has him pegged on my same altitude, and coming straight at me.

Tower only then advised the other plane to make a steep turn to the south immediately. Once he turned, I could spot him - less than 2000 feet away, on my 11 o'clock and on the same altitude. Approaching each other at 100 KTS plus, we had only a few moments to spare...

Thanks Zaon. Without you I would have (without questioning them) trusted ATC's judgement like before. You brought me home safely to my family today. I owe you one - that's why I share this experience.

In hindsight, I think I allowed ATC too much power in deciding over my (and the other pilot's) right to keep on living. I should have descended to 1500 AGL immediately once I got my information, and just informed ATC that I was descending to avoid the outbound plane.

Jakes -thanks for the very interesting post - glad it worked out. I saw the Zaon unit at Sun & Fun last year but didnt get around to buying one - sure sounds like it works. Do you have any problems with placing it in the AC, movement of the unit or other distraction.
