Cessna 175 engine conversion
Cessna 175 engine conversion
Hi, everybody I'm a new member.I have a cessna 175 with a GO-300 engine it's got about a hundred hours since a rebuild.I was considering doing a conversion but I have hit so many dead ends.People I have talked to always tell me to call someone else and then that person does the same.I figured that this organization probely has someone that has done this or knows someone.thats why i joined so if anybody knows of articles written or were I can get info that would be great.I am not even sure which engine to get I do know that Franklins are not in production anymore. So it will more than likely be a cont. or lycoming.
Thanks BRAD
Re: Cessna 175 engine conversion
The Skylark Club 175.org has some good information and discussions about engine swaps. They list the various STC's. There are quite a few members who also belong to the Cessna Owner Org.
I would like to have more information about your engine rebuild. My C-175A (1960)is in the middle of a restoration. Not sure when I will have it back in the air but most likely will be sometime next fall. I have two complete GO-300 engine cores. Hopefully between the two, I can build an engine.
Del-Air in California has a 180 hp lyc. STC. AVCON Conversions in Udall, Ks. also has a 180 hp lyc. STC for the C-175. There is a man in Harper, Ks who has a STC for the Con't. 0-470. Good luck,
Clay
Re: Cessna 175 engine conversion
Clay, thanks for the reply I spoke to a man in calirornia named Harry but do not have his company name it must be Del-Air the price he gave me was $40,000.00 man I was blowed away. That was wiyh a new engine.I'm going to try and call him again the first of the week and see if he has a info pack. The guy I purchased from had the rebuild doneso I really don't have a lot of info on mine.I was a member of the skylark club and i remember reading about a guy who was a GO 300 guru so I called him he told me that after he went thru the gearbox and rebuilt the entire engine it would come to around $25,000.00.I will try and find his name and number for you if I can.
thanks Brad
Re: Cessna 175 engine conversion
Brad,
Hate to say it but if you aren't really attached to your bird, sell it and buy a 17X with the conversion already done. The converted 172's and 175's do go for a premium, but after watching prices for a couple of years, I estimate the differential at anywhere from 10K to 20K when you purchase. Given the labor and cost involved, you'd be hard pressed to do the conversion for that.
But, if you are set on a conversion for your bird, like someone else said... go the 175 club for some reading. Personally, I'm flying a C172 0-360 Avcon conversion someone else did. It is a great airplane, but I wouldn't buy anything from Bush or Avcon if I was doing one myself. They are notoriously unresponsive to customers.
The 175 group has some info by a Alaskan named Stoots. He reports on an STC for a IO-360. The IO-360 has significant advantages if you fly a lot. You could put gami injectors on it, and routinely fly LOP, saving $.
There is also the Delair STC. I've talked to Harry, Mr. Delair. He is a hoot and knows the 170's 72's, and 75's like the back of his hand. If I recall correctly, his STC for the 175 stepped firewall comes with a gross weight increase.
best regards
Stan

Re: Cessna 175 engine conversion
I have a Cessna 175 with Franklin 220.
with a prop strike for sale and I would take a Go-300 and prop on trade .
I will do a fair trade if you need my Franklin 220 motor and prop.

Re: Cessna 175 engine conversion
As a review from flying a cessna 421 (also high rpm engine with gear reduction drive for a slower rpm prop), need to always have the engine rpm high enough to pull on the airplane (gear boxes turn to ash quickly when the airplane motion through the air is driving the prop faster than the engine). You can go fast or you can go down, you cannot go down fast. Also as a review from Cessna 175 literature, need to keep the engine rpm up (many pilots do not believe the higher rpm, run it too slow (insufficient cooling kills the engine)), and need to use really high climbing speed (else insufficient cooling kills the engine). Maybe why 1200 hour TBO. If you treat it right, it should work right. Watch the motor mount AD, lest the engine take on a new attitude relative the airframe. Something funny about the bore and stroke on the GO-300, so be careful about cylinders and pistons when replacing originals. This isn't an O-300 engine!
Re: Cessna 175 engine conversion
I have a 1960 175A and did my own conversion. I bought a Del Air conversion for $9500, a O-360A1A for $17250 and a constant speed prop for $7500. It's a real tight fit and there needs to be a lot of work done to the cowling. I have put 330 hours on it so far and my only regret is that i picked the wrong prop. Should have gone for the 80 inch conversion and gotten rid of the 2000 to 2200 no operation zone. In hind sight I should have saved myself a lot of work and bought a 175 that already had a conversion. It would have been a lot cheaper.
