Madras STC?
Madras STC?
I'm a COO member with a 182-E. I've owned my plane approximately two years.
The previous owner bought a set of Madras Air Service "Super Tips" direct from Madras with the STC. He never installed them on the plane, though. I have the tips and the hard-copy STC and was thinking of having them installed at my next annual.
My mechanic indicates that effective Jan. 2007, a serialized STC certificate is required--tied to my tail number. Since we have already paid for the STC for this plane, he recommended I contact Madras Air Service for an updated certificate.
Here's where things get interesting! Apparently, the owner of Madras retired in the last year or two, and the company is no longer in business. I can't find any information on who, if anyone, would have inherited the STC and company records. Is there any way to track this down? If not, is there no legal way I can install the tips on my plane? I hate to just throw them away!
Any help you can offer is appreciated.
Re: Madras STC?
I would ask for proof of this serialized concept. If you have the STC installation instructions and the STC covers your model of aircraft any A&P with I-A authorization should be able to install them. The serialized STC concept sounds fishy. That, as far as I know, only applies to 1 time STC's.
Cheers!
Kris
Re: Madras STC?
Good day Mr Opperman,
I am importing a 182G into Canada for a customer and they do not have a copy of their STC for the super tips. In particular we need to know if there is any instructions for continuing airworthiness or other specific details on the certification page. Can you help me with this information?
Thank you,

There is some information here
You may need to contact the FAA for more info. The STC does have to be tied back to a serial number.. I do not know if that rule is retro active though.

Re: Madras STC?
I called ANM-100s Seattle Aircraft Certification Office:
The STC requirement by aircraft serial number applies ONLY to one time STC installations.
The original STC by Madres Air Service is approved for a large number of Cessna 182 and 182RG aircraft and the tips can be installed per the STC. The STC addendum NO. SA1938WE requires changes to the aircraft weight and balance report as well as airspeed limitations by model.
I have the STC SA1938WE and installation instructions. I am looking for a copy of the Madras Air Service Super Tips Drawing No. 102 Sheet 1 and Sheet 2 if any of you have that.
Thanks,
Richard
Re: Madras STC?
I'd like a copy of those drawings too.

Re: Madras STC?
To: Grant Opperman & Larry Stan Ford or anyone else who might be able to help.
Do either of you have a copy of the Madras Drawing No.102 Sheet 1 & Sheet 2. I am happy to provide copies of STC SA1938WE and installation instructions to anyone who needs the airspeed info per model as well as Weight & Balance info and the placards for 182N & P models if that applies.
If anyone can help me with the drawings, please contact me at:

Re: Madras STC?
I have a copy of the "Super Tips" STC # SA1938WE and continuation sheet addendum which has "page 3 of 5 pages" on the bottom. I also have pages 4 and 5 of that addendum. I also have a copy of the "Service Instructions" which mentions installation on various models including the C-175 series among others. I also have a copy of a letter from the FAA Northwest Mountain Region to Madras dated April 3, 1985 which describes the completion of the their evaluation of the STC mentioned above and indicates approval of the STC. I would like a copy of the drawings No. 102 sheets 1 and 2 if anyone has them. Also does anyone have the STC or other paperwork for the installation of these tips on a C-175 and mentioned in the installation instructions?
Re: Madras STC?
Al,
I've attached a copy of what I have and I'd to get a copy of what you have too..
Drawing 102 isn't actually a drawing, it's the installation instructions.
You'll need to drop the .jpg off the end.. it's a pdf file
Thanks

Re: Madras STC?
I just completed an Engine change on A PA32R-300, which included four form 337 documents, and associated paperwork. They were:
1) removal of the Hartzell 2 blade prop, & the installation of a McCauley 3 blade 'scimitar' prop.
2) Installation of GAMI injectors
3) Installation of an "Aerosafe" electrically driven stand by vacuum pump.
4) Installation of a JPT engine monitor with fuel flow.
Each & every one of these STC's came with a document to register the STC, by aircraft s/n & owner. If the ownership of the airplane changes, the ownership of the STC changes as well.
I refer you to 14 CFR 21.120:
ยง 21.120 Responsibility of supplemental type certificate holders to provide written permission for alterations.
A supplemental type certificate holder who allows a person to use the supplemental type certificate to alter an aircraft, aircraft engine, or propeller must provide that person with written permission acceptable to the FAA.
That registration document I'm referring to is the 'permission slip' that is acceptable to the FAA.
Obviously JPI is not issuing "one airplane only" stc's, nor McCauley or GAMI. The mechanic the original poster refered to is correct. read the reg.
