Modifications within FAA Regulations?

I am considering purchase of a 172 with numerous modifications, some of which were performed by the previous owner. These include a complete custom interior and custom wing-tip landing lights for which he received and STC.

My questions is: What can I do to assure that all of these modifications comply with FAA regulations? This will be my first airplane purchase and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The mods that you are speaking of should have been checked at annual for compliance. You can contact the FAA Aircraft Records at (866)-762-9434. Provide them with the Registration number/Make/Model and they will send you a CD with everything on file about your airplane. The cost is $10. When doing a prepurchase inspection or a first time annual I always check that any and all modifications are registered at this office.

Jeff,

It's good to see you doing your home work before making your first airplane purchase. The following are my recommendations based on experience.

Regarding the custom interior, make sure the aircraft records show the materials to be approved. If he changed the foam in the seats, he should also be able to produce a document that shows the foam is approved.

Regarding any STC modifications, he should be able to produce the STC certificate indicating the approval for his C172. Also look for Form 337 in the airplane records as most alterations on the aircraft will require this to be filed with the FAA.

Also, check the logbooks to see if the work has been recorded and returned to service by an authorized mechanic.

Recommendation: As you mentioned numerous modifications, it would be advisable to have a pre-purchase inspection accomplished by an authorized mechanic. This could save you a lot of grief when you are downwind from the purchase.
