wing mods and slips with flaps on 172
I noticed in the manual on a 172 a model (1956) that full flap slips are not permitted. However I was wondering with vg's installed if this would make a difference in this type of configuration. Wonder if anyone has had any experience with this - thanks
Re: wing mods and slips with flaps on 172
My 1958 Cessna 175 w/Sportsman STOL and VGs will slip with full flaps, no problem. However, rudder deflection is very limited, so can not get a steep slip, such as you can with a Cessna 170, which is plycarded against full flap slips, which washes out the horizontal Stab, thus the tail goes up very quickly, until it reaches undisturbed air, then comes down. This happens very quickly, which is probably the reason for the caution. But it will slip very steep, while it goes through the girations, which will scare most pilots against ever doing it again.
I would not think that the vg's would make any difference.
Re: wing mods and slips with flaps on 172
My recommendation, from the maintenance side, would be to look at all of the paperwork included with the VG STC. If the STC modify's the flight characteristics of the airplane there should be a Flight Manual Supplement. (FMS) This document is FAA approved and a Full flaps slip should be addressed to modify the original placard in the aiplane, as this maneuver would have been demonstrated to get the approval.
