TKM MX 170B Omni head compatibility
I was wondering if anyone might bestow a little knowledge upon me before i replace a KX 170B that works just fine. At present time i have two KX170B's and one each KI 201C and a KI 211C omni head. The present Nav/Com #1 has VOR and glide slope indicators and the Nav/Com #2 just has VOR indicator. I've had this arrangement for over 20 years now and never not one moments worth of trouble with any of it other that the normal rechecks. Recently, on a 3000 mile x-country flight i was assigned (ATC) some of those "weird" and "oddball" frequencies. When I informed them I could not do thoses numbers they were quite nice about giving me some different ones i could do. I'm not sure if i caused any problems for them, if so, they did not let on as much. But anyway I guess I need to at least get one 760 channel radio so I won't feel like the OLD GEESER that I am next time. My QUESTION IS, will my Omni heads work with the TKM MX170B replacement ? if so which Nav/Com should I replace ? I'm heading to Sun-N-Fun next week and I don't particulary trust salesmen when I have my Credit card in hand.. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Re: TKM MX 170B Omni head compatibility
Hi Larry;
My 172 originally had two KX-170B radios driving a KI-214 VOR/GS indicator and a KI-208 VOR indicator. About 5 years ago, the King radios were replaced with two TKM MX-170B radios. No wiring changes were required to drive the indicators, as the VOR/GS channeling is handled by the radios, and the KI-214 has an internal glideslope receiver. I believe your KI-211 also has the internal GS receiver, so it should work with the TKM radios. The only difference between the KI-211 and the KI-214 is the 211 supports only 20 GS frequecies, and the 214 supports all 40. That would not change with changing the radios, but the TKM radios will give you the 760 comm frequencies you are looking for.
Hope this helps.

Re: TKM MX 170B Omni head compatibility
Hello, Larry-
The TKM radios are designed as direct slide-in replacements and should work fine in place of your Kings. I have a TKM in my plane and it's a nice unit. I sent it back to TKM as a couple of glideslope freqs. weren't working and they overhauled it for $150.00. Took about a month, with very good communication. They are affordable units but not popular with the avionics shops as they must be sent to TKM or an approved shop for repair. They are growing in popularity and reputation.
Good luck.
