Electrosystems (Starter): MZ4222; Failed Drive Splines; ATA 8011
“A pilot reported a grinding noise when the starter was engaged,” states this mechanic. “(I) removed the starter and disassembled (it)...and found the drive splines on the armature shaft broken off. This is the second such defect found in one month. No apparent cause (for this defect) was found.” He also describes not finding wear tolerance measures for the drive splines in the overhaul manual.
