The mechanic states, “(I) installed a factory overhauled engine onto this aircraft (Cessna 182 with Lycoming 540L3C5D). The Kelly Aerospace starter bendix was engaged when the engine was installed. After first start the starter would spin, but the bendix would not re-engage the starter ring gear on the engine. This starter (S/N E111092) was replaced with (another) overhauled Kelly Aerospace starter (S/N E123085).” (SDRS records four additional items relating to the MH 6016 starter. A generic “starter” data base query returns almost 300 entries from which to study.)

“(I had previously removed...) the defective Kelly Aerospace starter (S/N E11092) from the engine. (I) installed Kelly Aerospace overhauled starter (S/N E123085) on to the aircraft with the bendix engaged. After the first start the starter would spin but not re-engage the starter bendix into the ring gear on the engine. (I) installed a Prestolite starter MHB 4016 (S/N 6120763). Operation and ground run checked good.” (So...if you think this mechanic is experiencing frustration with starters, read the next submission for “streamlined frustration.”)
