Re: 78 Hawk XP For Sale
I found the injectors along with the JPI to be quite helpful. I don't think I gained all that much better fuel flow with the GAMI's. The JPI-700 will be a good improvement. It'll give you a much better feel for what is happening with your engine. It's quite helpful in leaning.
Good luck,
Bill
Re: 78 Hawk XP For Sale
Hawk XP's tend to be overpriced. I guess some people are afraid of the insurance difference. But, after 100hrs in type it is only a couple hundred bucks.
Take your $65K and buy a nice older 182.
Better take off and cruise performance. The book number out of the factory at full gross are nice enough. And built stronger than a 172.
Find an older one with manual flaps, stol kit and a big tail.
I get off the ground in 500 ft. with my wife and two kids. My dirt strip is at 5180 ele. I cruise to AK (home) and back each year and get 9.5 gph at 130kts. Ay sea level and 65 degrees (AK summer) we are usually flying in 250ft. Then you can "get out of where you can land".
Am I biased; probably so. But I have owned both and would not own a slant tail airplane (no rudder down slow) that is underpowered and over priced. Look at the specs below. Also go to Valdez, AK website May Day Fly-in (http://www.valdezalaska.org/events/flyIn/flyIn.html) and look at the short field TO and Landing competetion results. 182's consistantly win the heavy touring class.

Re: 78 Hawk XP For Sale
What is the point of knocking some-one's airplane for sale?? How rude! If the topic was about comparing R172K's with 182A's then fine, but give it a break!
I will not fudge up the ad with too much extra but some do not want the heavy feel of the bigger airplane. I love staight tails and johnson bars too, that's why I fly a 175 with the IO-360 engine. Light, quick, agile. The R172's predecessor- upgraded. You try to build an airplane equivalent to what he has for $65K. No dice- our airplanes are 20 years older than his. <End Rant>
Re: 78 Hawk XP For Sale
I suppose I could have started it with " If you have $65,000. to spend, maybe you should consider an early 182". It is not my intent to hurt feelings; just shed some light.
Kristopher says: some do not want the heavy feel of the bigger airplane. I love straight tails and Johnson bars too, that's why I fly a 175 with the IO-360 engine. Light, quick, agile...
Lets see...Heavy & Bigger
78 xp 1572lbs 35.86 wingspan Length: 27.16 ft
57 182A 1625lbs 36.00 wingspan Length: 25.08 ft
Difference 47lbs .14 .08
...Quick
78 xp Takeoff: 960 ft 75% Cruise: 130 kts
182 a Takeoff: 555 ft 75% Cruise: 134 kts
Difference 405 ft 4 kts
...Agile slant tail/omni vision -VS- slant back tall tail
We both know the answer to that!
Yes they are 20 years apart. But after the first 10 or so years; total time; damage history, use, care and environment play a much bigger role in value and safety.
NAAA Estimated Value 1978 Hawk XP
