Installation on electrosystems alterator on a O-300D
Installation on electrosystems alterator on a O-300D
Does anyone out there have a Kelly airborne electrosystems alternator on there O-300D on an early 172 (pre-1964)? I need to find some legal way to install one, a 337 for installation (or STC) for this alternator on a my O-300D. As I understand from my mechanic later versions of the 172 with O-300 engine had these alternators, but how would I put one on legally? Any help or even ideas would be greatly approciated. Thanks.
Re: Installation on electrosystems alterator on a O-300D
I may have this figured out since I found a TCM part number on the alternator and my mechanic said it could be put on using the service manual (a FAA approved document). But if anyone out there has one on there aircraft I would like to hear how they got it there and did it take a 337 filed with the FAA?
Re: Installation on electrosystems alterator on a O-300D
The Service Manual is not an a FAA approved document, it is considered "acceptable" data. There is a difference. A knowlegable IA can explain this in better detail that I can do here. Unless an alternator is an option in either the parts manual (per Serial Number) or indicated in the TC Data Sheet then the swap is considered a modification which requires either an STC or a field approval. I am in Texas and word is out that the FAA is not doing field approvals any more. The only option is to contact a DER (Designated Engineering Representative) and get the approved data from him/her for this to be a legal modification. DER's usually cost quite a few $$$. I don't know if there is an STC for your model, I would contact Kelly for information. I maintain a 57 182 which was recently converted to an alternator with a Kelly STC.
Re: Installation on electrosystems alterator on a O-300D
I tried that and Kelly Aerospace guy who responded told me they do not hold STC's! I think I can get a 337 approved here, but if someone with a 337 approval that has one on there aircraft (early 172, before 1964), would make my life a lot easyer since when I submit a 337 to the local FSDO with another approved 337 (two would be better)it takes the pressure off the local FAA guy and gives me a better chance to get a quick approval. But thanks anyway for the info.
