1966 172G Nose Wheel Shimmy
Nose wheel shimmys when applying brakes at or near landing speeds. e.g., slowing down to take nearest taxi way vice a later one. Releasing brakes and applying up elevator stops shimmy. Everything seems to be within tolerance and it has never shimmied on takeoff. Several folks have suggested using a lower air pressure as this puts more tire surface on runway and reduces shimmy tendancy. Manual states 26psi. Has anyone tried lower pressure before for this reason? If so was it successful? What tire pressure did you use? Does anyone know what the minimum safe pressure is for nose gear? Thanks in advance!
Re: 1966 172G Nose Wheel Shimmy
During annual first week of August we serviced the shimmy dampener. No more shimmy. I bet there was only one or two little bubbles or air that came out and I could not tell the difference in hand activation before and after. Must really need the dampener to be all that it can be.
