'61 182D Shoulder harnesses

Hey, ya'll

I've got a 1961 182D that we are getting ready to do some serious restoration on.

One of the many upgrades will be a new harness system. I want a four point harness of good quality. I'd love to have a BAS inertial reel system, but it is serious $$$, and other items need attention, too. I plan to eventually upgrade to the BAS harness, maybe in a few years. So, unless you know of a lower cost intertia reel system, it looks like fixed harnesses are going to be installed now. This of course brings up the issue of reaching the johnson bar. Does anybody offer a bent flap handle?

And, what about the rear seats? Is it possible to install a 4 pt harness back there? Of course, fixed harnesses will be just fine for the rear seat.

Thanks for your help

Let me see if I have this right. You are getting ready to do a serious restoration of your 182, but you are having a problem with the dollars for the BAS system? When I did the interior of my 1962 182, I had the BAS system installed. After spending over a bunch of money on the plane,(more than just the interior), I had the best of everything on the plane. So, if you are serious, spend the money now and have a first class restoration.
The inertial reel system lets you move around all that you want and need.

Re: '61 182D Shoulder harnesses

I'm afraid that I cannot spare the money for the BAS belts...I wish this could be a spare no money restoration, but it can't be.

Here's the deal...I am recieving this airplane from my father. It hasn't flown in several years, but is in decent shape considering how long it has been. I just got my PPL back in '06, and I am 20 yo. I've got a "free" airplane, but it has to have work, work that I cannot afford to do all at once.

My first objective is to get it flying, safely. To do that, we will spare no expense. Engine work, control cable work, fuel system work, brake system work...those are the biggies that I have to get done. I hope to get this plane in the air by the end of this year if everything goes well.

The next stage is to upgrade the instrument panel. I'm going to be doing some reworking of the panel when able, but we are not going to have much in the way of new stuff installed (not even a panel mounted GPS). Then I can worry about the nice stuff like the interior and such. I hope to eventually get my seats rebuilt by Oregon Aero, get Bose headsets, better panel, etc, but that's going to have to wait...just like the BAS harnesses. For now, every dollar saved will help...

Of course, I am always accepting donations...but advice on a fixed harness solution, or a less expensive inertia reel system would be nice. I can tough it out with a fixed harness for a few years, but any ideas would be welcome.
